Belinda has the best garden in our neighborhood. Whenever I pass by her house, I just can’t help but admire the wonderfully red roses and carnations and the other variety of plants she puts along. It’s like a small Eden inside her home, and she keeps it so wonderfully that her block is always a sight to see. When I visited her house party, I just have to ask her how she manages to make her garden so pretty.

She tells me that her garden wasn’t always like this. Last year, her garden was infected with so many pests that she can’t destroy them with regular insect sprays and other pest repelling method. One of the many sources of argumentations between her and her mother in the past was her decision to buy a big bike. Her mother thought that motorcycles, girls, and safety don’t go together. However, she did buy it anyway. Now that she’s coming home, I want her motorcycle to be ready for her. I need to buy a rust remover for its gas tank, so that it’ll sound and perform as good as new. I wanted to surprise my wife Laura when she comes back from her work outside of the country by giving the house a new look. It would truly surprise and delight her for sure.   I asked for advice from our friend John who is an architect and he did not hesitate to help me out with the mini-project that I had in mind. 

He did some draft drawings based on what I wanted the house to look like.  Since I did not want a major renovation, he suggested adding some accents like iron balcony railings on the outer part of the house to give it a new look.  It really looked pretty for he showed me another rendering that included those things.  He assured me that he could find a supplier that would provide them at a low price so I just placed the whole project into his hands. I told him that since it was his expertise, he do whatever it takes to make the house ready in time for my wife’s arrival.

Of course, since there would be work involved, accidents are likely to happen.  I did not stress over the fact that the one of the storm doors that we had was damaged when materials were being placed near the area. My friend assured me that it could be repaired immediately. 

Works are now done and true enough; the look on my wife’s face was priceless when she saw the new look that the house sported.

Repainting my friend’s house proved to be a tumultuous task since it’s a 20-year old house. It does not only need a new paint job. It needs everything done! Just by looking at it, you don’t know where to start and when to start. After a series of meetings with a well-recommended remodeling company, we were just about to quit. The company told us that it’s an intensive painting job and that they had to do it slowly but surely. The budget they gave us was a bit high but was competitive in the market. Still, my friend wanted to save money for his scheduled housewarming party after the repainting job that is.

When the higher ups asked us what we would like to upgrade in the restrooms and gave us a limit on what we could spend, the men chose the waterless urinals and the smart woman chose the hand dryers. We are all really happy with our choices. I think that next year, they are allowing us to upgrade a few things in the break room and then we will all have to agree on those things together.
